New Regional Distribution Centre in the North East

The Co-operative Group has announced plans to build a new £12m Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) in the North-East. The site secured is adjacent to the current Birtley depot, and will be a 270,000 sq ft purpose-built facility, providing a multi-temperature operation capable of delivering a flexible service to stores. Due to be fully operational during the first half of 2009, the site will replace current facilities in Birtley and Blaydon. |

Retail Logistics North West RDC

The Group Board has given approval to build a £20 million Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) in the North West as part of our plans to improve the distribution service to our 650 food stores across the region.
The new 360,000 sq ft facility is expected to begin operations in mid-2009 and will take on the work currently being carried out at Ossett and Bradford in Yorkshire and Talke and Eccleshall in Staffordshire. All staff have been informed of the plans for a composite RDC, and full consultation with them and their union representatives will take place during the next 20 months.
The rationale behind the new investment is to ensure service to our stores in the North West is efficient and that overlap and duplication is avoided. We are also experiencing problems with capacity at the existing sites which has affected our service to customers.
The new RDC will provide a multi-temperature operation, capable of serving all stores throughout the North West. It is a long-term solution to our distribution needs in the region and will secure future employment in the region, whilst giving customers the high level of product availability they expect.
We are looking at a number of potential sites for the new RDC, but no decision on its location has been made. Further announcements will be made to colleagues as this important project progresses. In the meantime, I would be grateful if you could please ensure that all members of your team who need to be aware of this announcement are briefed accordingly.
